TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Incoming students at The University of Alabama will have a chance to celebrate the beginning of their college careers in an inspiring occasion during the 2006 Capstone Convocation on Tuesday, Aug. 22 beginning at 7 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum.
This year, 175 outstanding undergraduate students will meet UA’s entering freshman class in a candlelit welcoming ceremony in honor of UA’s 175th anniversary.
The event will also showcase student talent and include performances in dance by UA student Katie Boyd, in music by a brass quintet with student and faculty members, and in rhetoric with remarks by award-winning student speaker Sonequa Martin.
“This is the first time all UA freshmen will be living on campus, and this event recognizes a new sense of community and a common living experience among UA students,” notes Dr. Hank Lazer, UA associate provost for academic affairs, who will be moderating the event.
Faculty Senate President John Vincent, professor of chemistry, will lead the procession. UA President Robert E. Witt, SGA President Justice Smyth, UA Student Leaders Council President Corrie Mosikowski and UA Resident Hall Association President Christina Quinones will make brief remarks and will join with all participants in reciting the Capstone Creed.
A dessert reception will immediately follow the event. The event is open to all new students as well as returning faculty and staff .
Classes at UA begin Wednesday, Aug. 23. For more information on the Capstone Convocation, contact the UA Office of Academic Affairs at 205/348-4890 or the UA Office of Student Affairs at 205/348-8272.
The Capstone Creed was developed by the Student Leaders Council as a reflection of the core values that sustain members of the UA community.
