Singleton Named Dean of UA College of Communication and Information Sciences

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Loy Singleton has been named dean of The University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Sciences.

Dr. Judy Bonner, UA executive vice president and provost, announced the appointment, which is effective July 1. Singleton replaces Dr. E. Culpepper “Cully” Clark, who served as dean for 10 years.

“Dr. Singleton is undoubtedly the most qualified person to lead and grow the UA College of Communication and Information Sciences,” said Bonner. “He is familiar with the new ventures launched during the last several years and has been instrumental in initiatives that promise huge benefits for the University.”

“I am extremely excited about the prospect of building on what the faculty, staff and (former deans) Ed Mullins and Cully Clark have established,” said Singleton. “This is clearly one of the preeminent colleges of communication in the nation, and I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as its dean.”

Singleton has been a professor and chair of the UA department of telecommunication and film since 1989. He serves on the board of the College’s WUOA and WVUA television stations (Channels 23/7), the Alabama Broadcasters Association and the Tuscaloosa Arts Council. He is also ex-officio general manager of the University’s student-run radio station, WVUA-FM.

Singleton’s research interests include media technology and policy. He is the author of two books as well as conference papers, book chapters and scholarly articles dealing with the regulation and impact of electronic media.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin, he spent five years as a U.S. Air Force pilot, then returned to UT-Austin and earned a master’s degree in journalism and a doctorate in mass communication research. He taught for 10 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was director of graduate studies and admissions in the department of radio-television-motion pictures.
