TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — An indoor climbing center opened this week as the newest addition to The University of Alabama Student Recreation Center
Located behind the racquetball courts on the first floor, the climbing center features top rope climbing, traversing and bouldering. Four climbing walls are dedicated to traditional climbing, with each wall ranging from beginner to advanced in skill level.
University students and Recreation Center members will receive three free climbing sessions, after three each session will cost $5. Participants who attend a belay class once a semester for $8 can climb free for the rest of the semester.
The climbing center also features an auto belay, a device that controls your fall, for participants who wish to climb alone.
Summer hours are Sunday through Thursday 2-9 p.m. and Friday 2 -7 p.m. In the fall the climbing center will be open later.
Climbing shoes are required and are available for rent at the UA Recreation Center for $2 per climbing session. Participants must also watch a safety video before climbing.
