Barr Named UA NAA President

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Robert W. “Bill” Barr of Troy has been named president of The University of Alabama National Alumni Association for 2006-2007.

Barr, a circuit judge in Pike County, began his affiliation with the NAA when he became a member and soon after an officer of his local alumni group, the Pike County Chapter. From 2001-2003 he served as the NAA District 13 vice president.

After graduating from the University in 1969 with a degree in business, Barr returned to the UA Law School and received his juris doctor degree in 1972. Thankful of the education and sense of pride the University gave him, Barr said he decided to return the favor through service and commitment and that the NAA offered the ideal outlet.

As president of the NAA, Barr hopes to demonstrate how important graduates are to the University. “Alumni are the source of new students, whether it is through their recruitment, family ties, or by being an example for potential students. It is through their time, efforts and hard work that opportunities that would never have existed are created and are immensely beneficial,” Barr said.

Barr and his wife, Nancy, reside in Troy and have two children: Meredith B. Fitz-Gerald, 32, and Rob Barr, 30.

The UA National Alumni Association is divided into 16 districts within Alabama and six regions outside the state. Each is represented by a vice president who serves on the NAA Executive Committee and makes decisions concerning the organization and funding of a variety of programs and events to benefit alumni, students and the University. The NAA supports UA through the combined efforts of its volunteer leadership, the alumni staff and more than 29,000 active members.
