WRC Hosts Annual Take Back the Night Event

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center is set to host its annual “Take Back the Night” march and vigil Wednesday, April 19 at 6 p.m. at Denny Chimes.

All students, faculty and members of the community are invited to attend this event in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The Take Back the Night march and rally began in 1976 in Europe. Women attending the international Tribuna on Crimes Against Women marched together in camaraderie, lighting candles to protest the violence in the lives of women internationally. This event was the foundation for the first American Take Back the Night rally in 1978.

Since that time, local communities have organized this event within their communities as a means to unify its members on their stand in opposition to violence against women. This year’s ceremony will include an opening ceremony at Denny Chimes, a march around campus and a conclusion rally.
