Tuscaloosa, Ala. – Dr. Carrie Rebora Barratt will present a lecture entitled “Gilbert Stuart at Home and Abroad” on April 6 at 6:30 p.m. at ten Hoor Hall in room 30 on The University of Alabama campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Barratt is the curator of American painting and sculpture and manager of the Henry R. Luce Center for the Study of American Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She has curated exhibitions featuring the work of Gilbert Stuart, John Singleton Copley, Thomas Sully and others as well as thematic shows including American Folk art, portraits of artists, period frames, and American drawings. Future projects include an exhibition on narrative painting; a study of the intersection of English and American painting of the 18th century; and a collection of the museum’s American portrait miniatures.
She is core lecturer and methodology instructor for Sotheby’s American Arts Course. Her recent publications include “Gilbert Stuart,” “Gilbert Stuart in England and Ireland,” and “Thomas Sully’s Account of Pictures.”
Her work has received numerous prestigious awards such as the Curatorial Travel Grant, the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship and the Chester Dale Fellowship, all given by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The lecture is co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the department of art and the Westervelt-Warner Museum of Young America.
