TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Culture of Peace Student Association will host the nationally acclaimed Faces of Iraq photography exhibit Feb. 15-25 in the Art Student League Gallery at 109 Woods Hall from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. weekdays on The University of Alabama campus.
Dr. Hank Lazer, renowned poet and UA assistant vice president for undergraduate programs and services, will be speaking at the opening ceremony on Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibit and opening ceremony are open to the public.
The exhibit is commissioned by the Education for Peace in Iraq Center, which aims to promote a secure and democratic Iraq, and Oxfam America, which seeks solutions to poverty, hunger and social injustice.
From a bustling book market on Baghdad’s famous Saadun Street to a rural village in the Southern marshes, the 50 photographs depict the daily lives of diverse Iraqis who have been obscured behind dictatorship, international isolation and violence for three decades. The exhibit includes the work of Iraq War veteran Benjamin Busch, award-winning labor photographer David Bacon, photojournalist Jane McBee and peace activist Gabriella Bulisova.
The Culture of Peace Student Association supports activities that foster a mutual understanding of communities of diverse backgrounds.
