UA Music Professor Named to Fulbright Post

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Charles Snead, horn professor and interim director of The University of Alabama’s School of Music, has been selected to serve on the FulSpec U.S. Studies – Music 2 Peer Review Committee for the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program. The School of Music is housed in UA’s College of Arts and Sciences.

The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program offers flexible, short-term grants of two to six weeks to U.S. academics and professionals recognized as authorities in their particular fields. Discipline peer review committees play a significant role in the process of identifying these experts.

The program allows established professionals in various disciplines to share their expertise with people of other countries and cultures.

Snead’s job as a reviewer is to examine resumes and letters of recommendation, as well as listen to recordings to determine if the applicant has the background and expertise needed for success.

“It has afforded me the opportunity to learn more about some really terrific people out there in my discipline,” Snead said. “Once we [the committee] review and accept an applicant for inclusion in the program they are ready to be matched with a given project or program request. It is a wonderful program that allows the effective spread of knowledge and the interchange of cultural ideas on a global scale.”

In collaboration with institutions of higher education, professional associations and Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) board members, CIES develops review committees that reflect academia’s disciplinary, geographic and institutional diversity.

The College of Arts and Sciences is the University’s largest division and the largest public liberal arts college in the state, with approximately 5,500 undergraduates and 1,000 graduate students. The College has received national recognition for academic excellence, and the College’s students have been selected for many of the nation’s top academic honors, including 13 Rhodes Scholarships, 15 Goldwater Scholarships, seven Truman Scholarships, one Udall Scholarship and 16 memberships on USA Today’s Academic All-American teams.
