UA Students Design New Menus for Local Restaurants

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Students in The University of Alabama’s College of Human and Environmental Sciences are designing new menus for local restaurants.

Students enrolled in a consumer sciences class focusing on consumer communications have learned to work with a client and produce a product that meets the client’s style and needs. Courtney McGahey, a consumer sciences professor at UA, said the students not only learn how to work with a client but also gain design experience.

Five local restaurants participated: Broadway Pizza, Zoe’s Kitchen, Tokyo, Cobblestone Café and Café Venice. The restaurant owners said they benefit from the students new ideas and creative ways to display the menu selections.

“I saw this as a way to get a professionally designed menu without spending a lot of money,” said Eric White, the owner of Broadway Pizza, 2880 Rice Mine Road.

UA’s College of Human Environmental Sciences was established in 1917 and is well known for its comprehensive approach to higher education. Students seeking degrees in professional service industries are well served by its academic programs, classroom instruction, real-world experience and mentoring by seasoned faculty. The College offers degree programs for careers in apparel and textile, athletic training, consumer sciences, early childhood development, financial planning and counseling, food and nutrition, family and consumer sciences education, health studies, human development and family studies and interior design.
