TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — This holiday season, The University of Alabama Freshman Forum is holding “Turkey Trot on the Quad with President Sorensen” to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.
The group is now selling raffle tickets to win an already-prepared turkey that will be delivered to the winner’s door on Thanksgiving Day. The winner will be announced on Nov. 20 after UA President Andrew Sorensen walks a turkey around the Quad.
Freshman Forum, a group of 50 UA freshmen, serves as the freshman class Student Government Association. The group is interested in creating awareness of the freshman class in the community and raising funding for purposeful projects on and off campus.
The raffle tickets are $3 and are available from any Freshman Forum member. Ticket sales will end Nov. 19. Tickets are now available at a table in the Ferguson Center until Nov. 17, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.
There will also be a table at “Kickoff on the Quad” on Saturday, Nov. 18, before the Alabama-Auburn football game. “Tyler the Turkey” — the turkey that Sorensen will walk around the Quad before the announcement of the winner — will be on display on Saturday.
The raffle winner will be announced at Denny Chimes on Monday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. Before the announcement, Sorensen will walk Tyler from the President’s Mansion, across University Boulevard and around the Quad to the steps of Gorgas Library. The grand-prize winner will then be named. The winner does not have to be present to win. Tyler will not be the turkey cooked for the prizewinner. Instead, another turkey from Bates Turkey Farm in Fort Deposit will be cooked and delivered to the winner’s address of choice.
Money raised from the turkey raffle will be used to finance UA’s “Dance Marathon 2K1.” The dance marathon, a yearly event benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network, will be held in spring 2001 at UA.
