UA’s Religious Studies Department Marks 50th Anniversary

Now, five decades later, UA’s department of religious studies is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a showcase of its accomplishments by students, graduates and faculty.

“A lot of units would invite people from outside to talk, as part of these celebrations, but we reasoned that the strength of our department is its current students, past students and our faculty,” McCutcheon said. “So our logic is we wanted to highlight those three groups.”

New UA Class Reveals History of Local Lynchings; Marker for Victims to be Erected

As part of a new history class called “Southern Memory: Lynching in the South,” which was started at The University of Alabama this fall by Dr. John Giggie, 15 students have spent the semester learning about the history and rationale of lynching, as well as tracking down the history of the documented lynchings that took place in Tuscaloosa County.
