Flu Update for August 26, 2009

The Student Health Center continues to see students who are exhibiting flu-like symptoms. The illness is generally mild; however, it is important for students who have flu to avoid contact with others as much as possible.

Cynthia Hope Named Assistant Vice President for Research at UA

Cynthia Hope, director of the Office for Sponsored Programs within the division of the Office for Research at The University of Alabama, has been named assistant vice president for research at UA.

Jay McGirt is sewing thousands of feathers onto a piece of burlap. It’s part of an exhibit depicting a Native American wedding scene to be displayed at The University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park museum.

U.S. News Ranks UA Among Top 50 Public Universities

The University of Alabama is again ranked among the top 50 public universities in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings for 2010. UA is ranked 43rd among public national universities and 96th among all universities, both public and private.

Information Concerning Flu on the UA Campus

As of Aug. 18, The University of Alabama has confirmed 21 students who are exhibiting flu-like symptoms. The CDC and the Alabama Department of Public Health continue to recommend that H1N1 be treated just like seasonal flu.

UA Engineering Appoints Back as Director of Construction Engineering Program

The University of Alabama College of Engineering recently named Dr. W. Edward Back director of the Construction Engineering Program.

UA Engineering Appoints Two Department Heads

The University of Alabama College of Engineering recently named two new department heads. Dr. Bob Taylor has been appointed to lead the department of mechanical engineering, and Dr. Viola L. Acoff has been named to direct the department of metallurgical and materials engineering.

School Bus Seat Belt Pilot Study Enters Final Research Year

A study, conducted through The University of Alabama’s University Transportation Center for Alabama, will provide information about school buses with seat belts for possible adoption throughout the state and the nation.
