Professors at The University of Alabama are offering a number of thought-provoking, unusual and challenging classes during UA’s May Interim session through Friday, May 22. Classes range from the “Scientific Glassblowing” to “Knitting and History.”
A record 14 University of Alabama graduates won Fulbright awards for 2015-16. Thirteen UA graduates won awards as teaching assistants to research and teach abroad, and one UA graduate received a Fulbright research award. The highly competitive Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study and research projects or for English teaching assistantships. More than 11,000 applicants compete for approximately 1,500 awards each year.
Two University of Alabama students in the College of Engineering will receive the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship for 2015-2017.
Several academic units at The University of Alabama have entered into collaboration with Court 13, a New Orleans-based film cooperative that produced the Academy Award-nominated “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” The collaboration is titled Court13@UA and started in the fall 2014 semester on the UA campus. The pilot year of the partnership has produced a short film, which premieres at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center.
University of Alabama fraternity and sorority members garnered $101,000 for area nonprofits and provided more than 1,200 hours of community service in fund-raisers and volunteer opportunities connected to UA’s Greek Week and the all-Greek service project.
The UA Council on Community-Based Partnerships will honor leaders in community engagement at the ninth annual Excellence in Community Engagement awards luncheon Friday, April 17, at the Bryant Conference Center. The program begins at 10 a.m. with research poster presentations, and the awards program starts at 11:30. The council also will celebrate UA’s 2015 Carnegie recognition as an engaged institution and award the first Zachary Dodson Memorial Scholarship.
The University of Alabama National Alumni Association recently named the recipients of its top awards.
The Impacting Poverty Team for The University of Alabama Center for Sustainable Service and Volunteerism will hold its annual Sleep Out on the Quad event from 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, until 6 a.m. Thursday, April 23, on the soccer fields near the Student Recreation Center.
One hundred outstanding high school sophomores who have shown an interest in leadership through service were selected to participate in the 2015 Capstone Leadership Academy at The University of Alabama.
