Sleep Out Event to Educate UA Students About Homelessness

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Impacting Poverty Team for The University of Alabama Center for Sustainable Service and Volunteerism will hold its annual Sleep Out on the Quad event from 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, until 6 a.m. Thursday, April 23, on the soccer fields near the Student Recreation Center.

The event is designed to raise awareness and sensitivity to the issue among students. It is being held in conjunction with the national Shut out Trafficking week, during which human trafficking awareness is highlighted.

Students will spend the night with a bare minimum of materials and supplies to simulate homelessness. The event will feature information stations to educate participants about homelessness and human trafficking in different parts of the world. In addition, the event will include guest speakers, panel discussions, films, games, contests with prizes and a midnight walk sponsored by TOMS shoes.

The event is open to students with an Action card and is worth 10 SL Pro community service hours.
