2005 Homecoming Queen Named at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama senior Mabry Poellnitz of Tuscaloosa was named the UA Homecoming Queen for 2005 during UA’s homecoming pep rally on Friday, Oct. 28.

UA students selected the queen in a general campus election held Tuesday, Oct. 25. Some 4,637 UA students voted in this year’s election.

The queen will be crowned during halftime of the homecoming football game between Alabama and Utah State on Saturday, Oct. 29, in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Poellnitz, a senior finance major, is a member of Order of Omega, president of Kappa Delta Sorority, a volunteer for Crossing Points and recipient of the Marion Day Mullins Scholarship.

The following students were chosen to be members of the 2005 UA Homecoming Court:

Marverly K. Nettles, a senior criminal justice major from Birmingham (zip code 35215, graduate of E.B. Erwin High School), who is a member of the UA Women’s Basketball Varsity Team, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society.

Divya Patel, a senior accounting major from Enterprise, who is a member of XXXI, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, president of the International Student Association and vice president of recruitment for the Alabama Panhellenic Association.

Jessica Joyce Thomas, a senior broadcast news and political science major from Birmingham (zip code 35214, graduate of Shades Valley High School), who is an officer of XXXI, a member of the Capstone Men and Women and an ASSCA Ambassador.

Sara-Catherine Thomason, a senior theater major from Cullman, who is past president of Alpha Psi Omega, a scholarship student in the department of theatre and dance and an APO scholarship recipient.

The Homecoming Choreography Contest took place Thursday, Oct. 27, with winners: 1st place-Alpha Delta Pi, 2nd place – tie between Phi Mu and Delta Zeta.

Lawn Decorations winners included: 1st place-Kappa Alpha Theta, 2nd place-Delta Zeta, 3rd place-Phi Mu.

Quad game winners included: 1st place-Phi Mu, 2nd place-Delta Zeta, 3rd place-Alpha Gamma Delta. Phi Mu won the Spirit Award.

Winners of the Roll Tide Run, held Sunday, Oct. 23, included: Women-Linda Ward (49:21), Adelaide O’Neal (49:42), Frances O’Neal (50:16); Men-Brian McCarthy (33:16), Ed Freeman (40:42), Owen Bradley (40:53).
