UA’s Sarah Moody Gallery Of Art Presents “Deborah Willis: Tied To A Memory”

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art at The University of Alabama will present the exhibit titled “Deborah Willis: Tied to a Memory” from Oct. 13 through Nov. 19.

An opening reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the gallery on Friday, Oct. 13, from 6-8 p.m.

Willis couples her childhood memories and photographs to her scholarly investigation of the history of African Americans in photography. The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City has put together an exhibition of Willis’ work that is both personal and all-encompassing. Stories and images are incorporated into quilts and assemblages, including a childhood Christmas, the family bridge game and Father’s collection of ties.

Willis serves as curator for the Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture at the Smithsonian Institution. Support for the exhibition has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council; the Arvin Gottlieb Charitable Foundation; UMB Bank, Trustee; the Hallmark Corporate Foundation; the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation; the Francis Families Foundation and the David Woods Kemper Memorial Foundation.

Funding support for the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is provided by the department of art and the College of Arts and Sciences at UA. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. 4:30 p.m. weekdays, and 2-5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.
