UA College Of Continuing Studies To Host 13th Annual Alabama Governor’s Safety & Health Conference

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The College of Continuing Studies at The University of Alabama will host the 13th annual Alabama Governor’s Safety and Health Conference Aug. 28 – 30, at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach.

The two-and-a-half day conference, titled “2001: A Safety & Health Odyssey,” is designed to enhance the knowledge of safety and health professionals from across the state and region on issues that impact worker safety. The conference will include technical sessions, regulatory updates, safety management training courses, and motivational speakers.

General sessions will address key issues affecting the work environment and provide pertinent information on current topics of interest. Technical sessions will include topics covering a wide range of occupational, safety and environmental subjects, plus updates on regulatory matters.

According to a proclamation by Gov. Don Siegelman, in 1999 the state of Alabama reported 101 occupational-related fatalities and 29,875 injuries in the workplace, resulting in worker’s compensation and medical payments of more than $525 million. Partly because of these facts, the governor has proclaimed the week of Aug. 28 through Sept. 1 to be devoted to the safety and health of all workers in the workplace.

Dr. Lawrence DeLucas will present one of the main topical speeches at the event. DeLucas is a professor in the School of Optometry, director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center X-ray Core Facility, and director of the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering (formerly the Center for Macromolecular Crystallography) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). From October 1994 to October 1995, he served as chief scientist for the International Space Station at NASA headquarters. He currently serves as a member of NASA’s Space Station Science Utilization and Advisory Subcommittee, the U. S. Space and Rocket Center Advisory Committee, and the Challenger Learning Center Advisory Board, among numerous other associations.
