UA to Hold Annual Communication Career Fair

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The 11th annual UA Communication Career Fair, hosted by the College of Communication and Information Sciences, is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Ferguson Center ballroom.

Representatives from all sectors of the media and some 300 students from campuses throughout the Southeast typically attend. Students will be seeking internships and information about jobs.

“The Communication Career Fair is open to all students,” said Dr. Caryl Cooper, C&IS assistant dean and coordinator of the event. “The recruiters are interested in students that can communicate visually, in writing and can think on their feet.”

There is still time for recruiters and students to sign up. Company representatives should send an e-mail message to cooper@apr.ua.edu with the name, title and e-mail address of its representative, the name of company, city/state and preferred length of interviews.

Companies should let Cooper know if they need Internet connections and they should bring their own signs and brochures. Interview space will be provided upon request. Students should bring at least a half dozen resumes and work samples to leave with recruiters.

This year, two special workshops are scheduled during the Communication Career Fair. The Sports Communication Workshop is scheduled from 11 a.m.-noon in the Heritage Room. This workshop will feature a panel of professionals working in various aspects of the field: reporting, announcing, marketing and public relations.

The Folio21 Workshop is scheduled from 2-3 p.m. The workshop will feature a demonstration about the University’s new online portfolio program.

The College of Communication and Information Sciences is among the largest and most prestigious communication colleges in the nation. Graduating more than 12,000 students, C&IS is consistently ranked among the top 10 in number of doctoral degrees awarded and in many of its research programs.

C&IS graduates have won four of the six Pulitzer Prizes awarded to UA alumni, the AdTeam has won one national championship, and the forensics and debate squad, housed within the College, has garnered 16 national championships.
