Shelton State students recognized for their academic achievements; To work with UA students in NASA competition

Two Shelton State students are being recognized for their academic achievements, while also getting the opportunity of a lifetime. Walker Davis and Samuel Hart are both Electrical Engineering students at Shelton State Community College. They were also just recently selected to represent the school’s All-Alabama Academic Team … The program has also opened doors for them, including a $1,500 NASA space grant each … These grants enable them to work with students at The University of Alabama and broaden their learning experience…Both students will transfer to The University of Alabama in the Fall to pursue Electrical Engineering degrees.

When the news broke that American Idol would call it quits next season, we couldn’t help but reflect on it’s incredible run. Idol really set the standard for music competition shows and will always have a place in pop culture history. It’s rating, at one time, set records for a single program. Dr. Eric Weisbard is an assistant professor of American Studies at The University of Alabama. He is going to help us put into perspective American Idol. “I would say that it ranks with the most profitable TV shows of all time. In a lot of ways, it was also the single-most powerful force in the music industry in the 2000s when record sales were practically falling apart because of the Internet, American Idol really stepped up.”

For most, paying federal taxes last month was a matter of adding up income, subtracting deductions and then sending a check – or waiting for a refund. But a smaller percentage of Alabama taxpayers got hit with an extra burden. It is called the alternative minimum tax, and it affected a little more than 25,000 Alabama taxpayers for tax year 2012, which taxpayers filed in 2013. That is the most recent year data is available from the IRS … Susan Pace Hamill, a University of Alabama School of Law professor, offered another explanation for why some of Alabama’s wealthier ZIPS have lower rates of AMT filers – and why Alabama ranks so low as a state. Alabama’s regressive tax structure plays a role, she said. High-tax states with graduated income taxes, like New York, result in a larger federal tax deductions for higher-income earners. “The AMT kicks in when a wealthier person has a lot of certain deductions,” she said. “These folks pay a greater percentage of income in taxes.” Hamill said a high earner in New York with the same income as a high earner in Alabama is more likely to be hit by the AMT. “Regressivity is not just a poverty thing,” she said.

Chattanooga golf tournament raises scholarship money for minorities to attend college

Some area residents got to hit the links today and raise money for charity at the same time. The second annual Paul A. McDaniel Scholarship tournament took place at the Brown Acres golf course. 23 teams took part. The tournament benefits African-American men. Some of them are attending college at The University of Alabama, UTK, Emory and Austin Peay University. The money raised helps minorities pay for college tuition.
Nick Saban honors Willie Carl Martin in his hometown of Alexander City

Nick Saban and his wife Terry visited Alexander City today taking part in “Willie Carl Martin Day.” Martin is the only coach to win a state high school title at Benjamin Russell High School. He also worked for Saban and Alabama as Director of Player Development … The legacy will live on at the school with a Willie Carl Martin Scholarship for students heading to The University of Alabama.
