TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama grounds department will celebrate Arbor Day, Friday, April 24, at 2 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the north side of Woods Hall.
The ceremony will be at the new location of a 25-year-old Japanese maple tree that the grounds department moved from the Peter Bryce campus in January. The area next to Woods Hall was recently renovated as part of improvements to the Ferguson Center.
The tree was moved in partnership with the University Landscape and Grounds Advisory Board and Campus Planning and Design. Campus landscape architects Bonner Lee and Guy Reynolds selected the tree for transplantation because it was located on the site of ongoing road construction on the Peter Bryce campus.
The UA grounds team of Chad Bailey, Chad Coleman, Paul McGill and Hunter Nix transplanted the tree. It has fully leafed for spring in its new location.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will signify the importance of practicing sustainability by maintaining and caring for campus trees.
