Throwback Thursday: The day a meteorite hit a Sylacauga woman
Al.com – Oct. 2
A Sylacauga woman made national headlines 60 years ago when a meteorite crashed through her house Nov. 30, 1954. The rock left a massive bruise on Ann Hodges’ hip while she was sleeping on her couch. Hodges was dubbed the first human in history to be struck by a meteorite, or as Life magazine called it, “assault by cosmic missile.” Photos from our archives show Hodges with the 8.5-pound meteorite and roof damage in her home. After a legal battle, Hodges gained permanent possession of the rock–now known as the Hodges Meteorite. She donated it to University of Alabama Museum of National History, where it remains today. Hodges died in 1972.

If you missed out on first Thursday, you can still plan for First Friday. Local galleries, businesses, and restaurants will be open from 5 until 9 to show what Downtown Tuscaloosa has to offer.
