TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center will sponsor a Sexual Harassment, Assault & Rape Prevention (SHARP) self-defense course open to female students, faculty and staff Aug. 14-15 from 1-5 p.m. at the University Recreation Center.
The training is a combination of discussion on psychological risk reduction strategies of self-defense followed by basic physical techniques. The class is taught by certified SHARP instructors from around campus, including the Women’s Resource Center, University Police, Housing & Residential Communities and University Recreation.
“SHARP empowers women by educating them on self-protection and safety precautions,” says Stacy Searle, peer education coordinator with the UA Women’s Resource Center. “The class provides a positive atmosphere that leaves women feeling confident and strong.”
The class is limited to 30 participants; people interested in the class are asked to pre-register with the Women’s Resource Center by Aug. 3. Moderate physical exercise is involved and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing.
