Former CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson speaks at the University of Alabama
Tuscaloosa News – April 1
Valerie Plame Wilson was introduced Monday at the University of Alabama as the spy whose cover was blown by a Bush administration official in 2003, but her talk wasn’t about the end of her career with the CIA. Instead, the former covert CIA operations officer who specialized in preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction focused on the story of her work after her career as a spy ended and her ongoing advocacy for the elimination of nuclear weapons. “This resonates with me in a very real way,” she said. Plame Wilson spoke Monday at Farrah Hall ahead of a free public screening of the documentary “Countdown to Zero,” a 2010 film in which she was featured. The film traces the history of the atomic bomb.

UA hosts collaborative exhibit of Cuban art work
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – March 30
If you like books, art, and all things Cuban, you are in luck. The University of Alabama is hosting a collaborative exhibit of Cuban works that shows off Cuba’s local artists and poets that the university has worked with over the past six years. Two professors and four students went on a weeklong trip this past February to work on this year s project, which is called “Catch and Release.” “We also work on the design, layout, and then the ultimate goal is that we put it together in Cuba so we do the front end work here in terms of the design and the artists do the work in terms of images and then when we go to Cuba we put it all together.” For those interested in visiting the exhibit, you can do so through April 4 on the top floor of Gorgas Library.
UA students to work in Moore, Okla., during spring break
Fox 6 (Birmingham) – March 24
From our Tuscaloosa newsroom, some University of Alabama students give up spring break at the beach to help those who are dealing with adversity that they’re quite familiar with. Some students will work in Moore, Okla., helping tornado victims the same way Tuscaloosa was helped after the April 27 tornado. The tornado in Moore took 23 lives. The group from UA’s community service center is set to be in Moore through Friday. The trip grew out of a gift card drive the students did right after Moore was hit by the tornado. At the time, they said Tuscaloosa learned how valuable gift cards can be to meet immediate needs after the storm. 16 students are part of the group traveling with the community service center this week.
