TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama National Alumni Association’s photography show “Perspectives” will be moving to the card room of Capstone Village for display Sept. 14 through Nov. 19, the last leg of its exhibition in celebration of the Year of Alabama Arts.
The exhibit is free and open to the public.
The display features unconventional portraits of UA student and faculty artists, including painters, writers, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, fashion designers and other creative disciplines. Those portrayed come from the UA Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Communication and Information Sciences, and Human Environmental Sciences.
Capstone Retirement Village is a stop on the Blue Line of the Crimson Ride transit system, a convenient trip from any location on campus, including during football weekends. Visitors should enter at the main lobby and stop at the welcome desk for directions to the exhibit and availability. To ask about hours of operation before visiting, call Capstone Village at 205/248-0028 or 1-800-799-5099.
The talent behind “Perspectives” is photographer and 2007 UA journalism graduate Rachael Crawley from Grand Bay who emphasized both the artists and their crafts when formulating her work. “I tried to capture the artist embodying their respective art form,” Crawley said. “The photos are representative of the arts in the general meaning and the artists in an individual sense.”
Not only did Crawley, who was in her last semester at UA at the time, have to coordinate, schedule and photograph all the subjects, she had only two weeks to accomplish it. “Getting the photo shoots planned and completed took lots of determination and extra hours,” said Crawley, who is now at EBSCO in Birmingham as a corporate communications intern. “Luckily for us, all of the artists were willing to be flexible with their time in order to help make this happen.”
The alumni publications department decided to honor the Year of Alabama Arts, as declared by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel, through selecting UA artists as its theme for the NAA’s 2006-2007 Annual Report. As an extension of this project, the photography display was planned to showcase the artists to the campus community. The display previously appeared in the Ferguson Center, in Alumni Hall and at the UA Medical Center.
