Academy aims to bolster parental ties

Parents from participating Tuscaloosa city and county schools were honored Tuesday night at the Bryant Conference Center for their involvement in the Tuscaloosa Parent Leadership Academy…The program is a partnership between University of Alabama faculty members, city and county educators and parents. ‘Parents who graduate from PLA increase their knowledge of the entire education process, from classroom instruction and discipline to outside learning,’ said Christopher Spencer, associate director of the UA Center for Community-based Partnerships and the chief organizer for this year’s academy…Since its start in 2007, the program has increased the number of parents participating. The goal is to have more than 60 participating families for the 2009-10 school year. ‘Last year was our first year with 20 parents. This year we’re up to 40,’ said Samory Pruitt, the vice president for community of affairs at UA. ‘We have 10 schools from the city and 10 schools from the county. We keep adding schools, and our goal is to have all the elementary schools in the area.’…
Sessions to be ‘face’ of GOP

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions is about to become ‘the face of the Republican Party,’ the chairman of the political science department at the University of Alabama said Tuesday…’This is clearly going to put [Sessions] in the national spotlight for the first time,’ UA professor David Lanoue said Tuesday. ‘And it will be interesting to see how he handles himself in being the point man to fight the confirmations of nominees from a popular president.’…
