ATHLETICS

The University of Alabama will host a “Celebration of Life” in memory of former Crimson Tide Director of Athletics Mal Moore in Coleman Coliseum on Thursday, April 4, at 3 p.m.
Coleman Coliseum, the Bryant Drive parking lot and the eastern half of the soccer parking lot will be closed all day on April 4. Information on alternate locations for commuter parking can be found by clicking here. People who normally park in these lots are urged to plan for this change and allow themselves ample time to access the alternate parking areas. 

Crimson Ride will run additional bus service during this time. 

The UA gymnastics team is the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional Championships that will be held in Coleman Coliseum Saturday, April 6, at 6 p.m. The Crimson Tide will be joined by No. 2 seed Utah, No. 3 seed Denver, Kent State, BYU and Iowa State. Click here to buy tickets. Tickets are also available through the Alabama Ticket Office (348-2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum. Unlike the regular season, there is no free admission for UA students, but the Medalist Club, the gymnastics team’s booster organization, has purchased tickets so that the first 2,000 Alabama students will get tickets with a valid Action Card.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The University will test UA Alerts and the emergency public address system at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday, April 3. The test will last approximately 30 seconds and should not be disruptive. Immediately following at noon, the Tuscaloosa Emergency Management Agency will test the outdoor tornado sirens.

Students should update their contact information on myBama to ensure they receive the UA Alerts messages. Students who currently receive the alerts but would prefer to be contacted differently will need to revise their contact information. To view and make changes to information online, students can click here.

The University will manage all campus mail service following the closure of the U.S. Post Office in the Ferguson Center at the end of the semester. The current post office space in Ferguson will be renovated and will open as the Student Mail and Package Distribution Center this summer. The center will handle all student mail and packages, departmental mail and all other mailing options that are currently available with USPS. Students will be able to rent a mailbox and receive USPS, UPS and FedEx items at that location. In addition, computers will be available for students, faculty and staff to go online to ship items by UPS or FedEx. These packages will be accepted at the mail counter. The new center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Additional information will be posted at http://www.campusmail.ua.edu in the coming weeks. The UA app has a new update for all iOS devices, including iPods, iPhones and iPads. The update includes new features for the Action Card. Users can make deposits, check balances and review transactions for Bama Cash and Dining Dollars. To make deposits, users must first save their account information in the secured Action Card portion in myBama. For additional information, contact the Action Card office at http://actcard.ua.edu.

The update also improves functionality for iPads using Blackboard Learn. The native iPad version of the Blackboard Mobile Learn app can be accessed from within the UA app installed on iPads. The iPhone/iPod Touch version is also available. When selecting the Learn feature, users will be directed to Apple’s App Store to download the free version of Blackboard Mobile Learn separately if they haven’t already done so. Housing and Residential Communities has launched a website at http://offcampushousing.ua.edu to aid students in finding off-campus housing. Students can search for off-campus housing using parameters such as distance from campus, monthly cost, number of bedrooms or bathrooms, amenities and availability date. They can also search for off-campus roommates, furniture for sale and subleases from other students. Additional information includes landlord and tenant issues, leases, city ordinances and budgeting. UA faculty and staff and the general public can also use the website. The service is free for UA students, parents, faculty and staff. Property managers and owners will pay a fee to post listings. As a reminder,UA employees and students could be in violation of the Zoning Ordinance of Tuscaloosa (Chapter 24 of the Code of Tuscaloosa) if they rent out their homes during sporting or other events held in Tuscaloosa. Sigma Delta Tau sorority is hosting its annual Pinwheels for Prevention today through April 5 in the Ferguson Center. Each pinwheel is $1, and all proceeds will benefit SDT’s national philanthropic endeavor to prevent child abuse in America. One pan point will be awarded for every pinwheel purchased. Zeta Beta Tau fraternity and Phi Mu sorority will host the “Get on the Ball Kickoff at South of the Border Crawfish Boil” Saturday, April 6, from noon to 5 p.m. at the ZBT house. Cost is $5. Proceeds will benefit sick children. In addition to crawfish and drinks, the event will include volleyball and a raffle. Students are invited to join the Community Service Center April 10 for the Sleep Out on the Quad to promote awareness of homelessness issues that exist in Alabama and across the nation. The event begins at 8 p.m. on the Quad in front of Lloyd Hall with a panel discussion featuring representatives from Habitat for Humanity, the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center and the Jesus Way Homeless Shelter. Other activities include a trivia game, watching “The Pursuit of Happyness,” and a walk around the Quad without shoes. Students must furnish their own sleeping bags and plan to leave the Quad by 6 a.m. on April 11. After the event, the project will be listed at http://slpro.ua.edu for students to log their service hours. Students who stay overnight will receive up to 10 community service hours. The Campus Veterans Association will host its second annual golf tournament at the Capstone Club of Alabama in Brookwood, Ala., on April 13. Registration is $90 per person or $300 per team. “Hands on Tuscaloosa: Earth Day Edition” will be held Friday, April 5, from 9 a.m. to noon. Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza. Transportation will be provided to service locations. Service projects include river cleanup, Hurricane Creek campground cleanup, PARA bike-trail beautification and other projects in the Tuscaloosa community.
