ATHLETICS

The University of Alabama men’s basketball team earned a No. 1 seed in the 2013 National Invitation Tournament and will host Northeastern University today in the opening round of the event. The Crimson Tide and the Huskies will tip off in Coleman Coliseum at 8 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2. UA student tickets are $4 each and can be ordered online at www.rolltide.com or purchased at the ticket window in Coleman Coliseum. All seats are general admission.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The University will manage all campus mail service following the closure of the U.S. Post Office in the Ferguson Center at the end of the semester. The current post office space in Ferguson will be renovated and will open as the Student Mail and Package Distribution Center this summer. The center will handle all student mail and packages, departmental mail and all other mailing options that are currently available with USPS. Students will be able to rent a mailbox and receive USPS, UPS and FedEx items at that location. In addition, computers will be available for students, faculty and staff to go online to ship items by UPS or FedEx. These packages will be accepted at the mail counter. The new center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Additional information will be posted at http://www.campusmail.ua.edu in the coming weeks. The University of Alabama recognized Dr. Archie Wade, the first African-American faculty member at UA, with a ceremony on March 12. Wade was honored with a plaque commemorating his 30 years as a faculty member in the kinesiology department. The plaque will be placed in the conference room of Moore Hall, where Wade had an office and taught classes. The recognition program was part of the University’s “Through the Doors” activities, which celebrate the 50th anniversary of integration at UA. The UA app has a new update for all iOS devices, including iPods, iPhones and iPads. The update includes new features for the Action Card. Users can make deposits, check balances and review transactions for Bama Cash and Dining Dollars. To make deposits, users must first save their account information in the secured Action Card portion in myBama. For additional information, contact the Action Card office at http://actcard.ua.edu.

The update also improves functionality for iPads using Blackboard Learn. The native iPad version of the Blackboard Mobile Learn app can be accessed from within the UA app installed on iPads. The iPhone/iPod Touch version is also available. When selecting the Learn feature, users will be directed to Apple’s App Store to download the free version of Blackboard Mobile Learn separately if they haven’t already done so. Housing and Residential Communities has launched a website at http://offcampushousing.ua.edu to aid students in finding off-campus housing. Students can search for off-campus housing using parameters such as distance from campus, monthly cost, number of bedrooms or bathrooms, amenities and availability date. They can also search for off-campus roommates, furniture for sale and subleases from other students. Additional information includes landlord and tenant issues, leases, city ordinances and budgeting. UA faculty and staff and the general public can also use the website. The service is free for UA students, parents, faculty and staff. Property managers and owners will pay a fee to post listings. As a reminder,UA employees and students could be in violation of the Zoning Ordinance of Tuscaloosa (Chapter 24 of the Code of Tuscaloosa) if they rent out their homes during sporting or other events held in Tuscaloosa. The University Stewards is accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year. University Stewards provide personalized campus visits for prospective students and their families. UA Students for Fair Labor, a new student group, will screen the documentary “Life and Debt” today at 7 p.m. in 335 Lloyd Hall. “Life and Debt” explores the sweatshop industry in Jamaica and some of the causes and effects of globalization and free trade. All female UA students, faculty and their family members over the age of 15 are invited to one of two women-empowerment seminars on March 21 in the Ferguson Center Ballroom. The first session begins at 6 p.m., followed by the second session at 8 p.m. Each session is free and will teach self-defense and raise awareness of sexual assault. Sigma Delta Tau will host its annual Pinwheels for Prevention April 1-5 in the Ferguson Center. Each pinwheel will cost $1, and all proceeds will benefit SDT’s national philanthropic endeavor to prevent child abuse in America. One pan point will be awarded for every pinwheel purchased. Students are invited to bring their sleeping bags and join the Community Service Center April 10 for the Sleep Out on the Quad. The event will begin at 8 p.m. on the section of the Quad closest to Lloyd Hall with fun activities and movies. A panel discussion will explore the issues of hunger, homelessness and poverty. The Campus Veterans Association will host its second annual golf tournament at the Capstone Club of Alabama in Brookwood, Ala., on April 13. Registration is $90 per person or $300 per team. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

“Hands on Tuscaloosa: Earth Day Edition” will be held April 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Service projects include Black Warrior River cleanup, Hurricane Creek campground cleanup, PARA bike trail beautification and Head Start beautification. Click here to register. The Center for Community-Based Partnerships is seeking volunteers for the Heart Touch program. Heart Touch is a culture-enrichment program that provides an opportunity for youth and children in the United States and China to learn about each country’s culture through letter writing and presentations. UA students can volunteer to serve as pen pal translators and as activity assistants in after-school programs held by Tuscaloosa’s One Place in seven elementary schools.
