The University of Alabama will test its outdoor emergency-notification system Friday, March 8, between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The test will include the new speaker at the corner of 14th Street and 12th Avenue, along with the other speakers in the system. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Students can make a difference in the community and earn 3 hours of honors credit through PlanFirst, a service-learning course in which students will focus on the various facets of Tuscaloosa’s planning department. Students in PlanFirst will spend an initial six weeks learning about the city of Tuscaloosa, general planning principles, cooperation and conflict communication, and the rebuilding process. Students will also spend six weeks serving and shadowing city of Tuscaloosa planning staff. The course is open to UA students of any major who are in good standing with the Honors College and have an interest in some aspect of city planning. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

March 11 is the deadline for students to apply to be members of the 2013-2014 SOURCE Board of Governors, which consists of five collaborative leaders who work to provide resources and services to UA’s registered student organizations. More information: http://thesource.ua.edu.

The Spanish House and Spanish Club invite students to a weekly Spanish Conversation Hour on Mondays from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Starbucks in the Ferguson Center. Open to all levels. More information: Jessica D. Jacob at jdville@crimson.ua.edu.

EVENTS

Tide Talks is a new student organization at UA that will showcase student experiences and triumphs on stage. The first event will be held March 5 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. Four revolutionary and inspirational students from campus will present their perspectives in their fields. More information: Alec Owens at tidetalks@gmail.com.

Professional Development Day will be held Wednesday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in 222 and 226 Reese Phifer Hall. Six sessions throughout the day will cover ethics and legality, networking, business dress and etiquette, interviews, personal branding, and résumé and portfolio critiques. All sessions will be 30 minutes long, followed by 15 minutes of questions and answers. More information: Myreete Wolford at mwolford@crimson.ua.edu.

Graduating students may visit a number of vendors during the Graduation Celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 6-7 at the Ferguson Center Plaza and March 8 in the Ferguson Center lobby. Students can place orders for class rings and graduation announcements and order their caps and gowns, diploma frames, and hoods (for master’s and doctoral students). The Women’s Resource Center will present the third Brown Bag Lecture Series on March 6 at noon in  360 Ferguson Center. Dr. Pamela Foster, assistant professor in the College of Community Health Sciences, will speak on the topic of “Women’s Empowerment Strategies in HIV/AIDS Prevention.” Puneet Gill, UA doctoral student, will speak on the topic of “Sex Education in Life Science Classrooms.” Attendees should bring their lunches. Creative Campus and the Career Center invite students to UA’s first Creative Career Fair on March 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Heritage Room of the Ferguson Center. The fair will provide students with resources for pursuing successful creative vocations. Featured workshops include Crafting a Creative Résumé, Delivering the Perfect Elevator Speech, Budgeting for a Sustainable Arts Lifestyle, and Matching Personality with Career Path. The UA community is invited to listen to Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Bragg March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Student tickets are $8; regular tickets are $12. UA’s Campus Crusade for Christ will host Marian Jordan at “Girls’ Night Out”  on Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. Jordan is the founder of Redeemed Girl Ministries. The annual UA Dance Marathon will be held March 9 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center. Proceeds will benefit children who are experiencing various health issues. The “no-sitting celebration of life” is filled with sports, competition and excitement. At various times during the event, participants will hear from the children and families who will benefit from the proceeds. The Alabama Panhellenic Association will host its annual Easter egg hunt for the Tuscaloosa community on the front lawn of the President’s Mansion on Sunday, March 10. The event is organized for children 12 years and younger and is free to the public. The hunt will begin at 2 p.m. and last until 3:30 p.m. or until the last egg is found. Parking is available behind sorority row. The hunt will be cancelled in the case of inclement weather. First Generation Scholars’ Week will be held March 11-15. The week will include a variety of workshops and activities at the Ferguson Center for first-generation students. Click here for more information.

University Programs will host a free tax-filing session March 11 at 6 p.m. in 319 ten Hoor Hall. Seating is limited. An IRS certified tax coordinator will lead the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to work with assistants while filing their taxes. Students who want to attend must bring their W-2 forms and register at http://uaferguson.tix.com. A “Safe Spring Break Student Health Fair”  will be held March 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza. Participants can receive free vaccinations, health screenings and information about campus and non-campus organizations that can assist students with their physical and mental well-being. The SGA Judicial Board invites the University community to the second annual Coaching Character event March 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the North Zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium. David “The Dating Doctor” Coleman, a 13-time national speaker of the year, will be on campus Monday, March 11, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. The audience will determine the topics that will be covered once they enter the theater and will also act as consultants for one another, challenging and supporting each other during a continuous give-and-take on issues of healthy relationships. University Programs will take a limited number of students to Cobb Theatres to see “Oz the Great and Powerful” in 3-D on March 13. Limited seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who register to attend the event must ride the buses provided by UP. Check-in will start promptly at 5:15 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Buses will load and leave for Cobb Theatres at 5:30 p.m. Individuals may register for free at http://uaferguson.tix.com. UA’s Afro-American Gospel Choir will present its annual benefit concert March 16 at 5 p.m. at the University Church of Christ at 1200 Julia Tutwiler Drive in Tuscaloosa. The Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity will host the Miss Liberty Pageant on March 16 in the Ferguson Center Ballroom for individuals ages 0-24. The entry fee is $25, and the deadline to submit applications is March 10. All female UA students, faculty and their family members over the age of 15 are invited to one of two women-empowerment sessions on March 21 in the Ferguson Center Ballroom. The first session begins at 6 p.m., followed by the second session at 8 p.m. Each session is free and will teach self-defense and raise awareness of sexual assault. The Campus Veterans Association will host its second annual golf tournament at the Capstone Club of Alabama in Brookwood, Ala., on April 13. Registration is $90 per person or $300 per team. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Community Service Center is hosting Stop Hunger Now to raise money to package meals that will be sent to countries in need. The goal is to raise $2,500 to package 10,000 meals. The Center for Community-Based Partnerships is seeking volunteers for the Heart Touch program. Heart Touch is a culture-enrichment program that provides an opportunity for youth and children in the United States and China to learn about each country’s culture through letter writing and presentations. UA students can volunteer to serve as pen pal translators and as activity assistants in after-school programs held by Tuscaloosa’s One Place in seven elementary schools.
