The University of Alabama School of Law landed at 30th in this year’s ranking of law schools by U.S. News & World Report. It’s the highest ranking for the school, and its 11th straight year in the annual “Best Graduate Schools” edition of the magazine. It’s the 11th-highest ranked public law school, and the only top tier law school in the state, according to the magazine…For the first time in four years, U.S. News also ranked schools of library and information science, and UA’s ranked 22nd. Alabama home sales totaled 3,209 during March, a 19.5 percent drop from a year ago, the Alabama Center for Real Estate at the University of Alabama said Thursday. Last month’s home sales, however, rose 29 percent over February’s total, the center said. Month-to-month comparisons have taken on greater significance during the current market slump.

Rehabilitation service program helps people with disabilities find work

…Tuscaloosa’s Vocational Rehabilitation Service…Employers who have worked with VRS to find work for their clients include Bryce Hospital, DCH, the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa Department of Veteran Affairs, Phifer Wire Products, the Westervelt Co. and Randall Reilly…Kenneth Gaddy, director of the Paul W. Bryant Museum, said the museum employs two people with disabilities. Kenny Denton, the museum’s film care specialist, started work at the museum after a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. “I wasn’t aware of the program or really the need to support the disabled,” Gaddy said. “But after someone called, I became aware that there was a need, and it’s been a very positive experience.”…

Freshmen move-in day in August

…This August, as the student organization Crimson Karma’s first event of the 2009-2010 year, a group of volunteers will welcome freshmen into their dorms on move-in day and assist them during their move. Crimson Karma is a student-led initiative that’s purpose is take ownership of the university by getting students more involved, said Jereme Gray, a sophomore majoring in engineering…

Community service opportunities abound

…The UA Community Service Center located in the Ferguson Center has a directory of volunteer opportunities, said Travis Mozingo who works in the office. Students can come by and look through this directory and pick out the opportunity that best suits them this summer. Because the Community Service Center has gone completely green this year, their summer volunteer opportunities will be centered on cleaning up Hurricane Creek, painting fences around Tuscaloosa and helping to clean up the city, Mozingo said…

Slash Pine Press launches with poetry festival

Slash Pine Press, the fledgling venture of University of Alabama English department lecturer Joseph Wood and professor Patti White, launches with a plethora of performances, from Kentuck’s courtyard to the Arboretum Amphitheater to Little Willie’s and more. There’ll be readings from 40 UA faculty members, graduate students and area poets, along with music by Celtic folk group Waxwing…
