TUSCALOOSA, Ala. —Graduate students from The University of Alabama School of Social Work, in partnership with the Tuscaloosa City Police Department, will host a community health fair from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Jaycees Fairground in Alberta City.
The fair includes free health screenings and information, interactive games, free door prizes, as well as family activities. Health information will be available in Spanish, and interpreters will be available. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and beverages.
According to J. K. Terrell, instructor in the UA School of Social Work, the health fair is open to all in the eastern side of Tuscaloosa and the Alberta City area, one of the city’s worst-hit areas in the April 27 tornado outbreak. A free shuttle service will be provided at select times.
“The Community Health Fair will offer free cholesterol, blood glucose, bone density, diabetes and blood- pressure screenings as well as important health education related to each test,” said Terrell.
Additionally, Terrell noted that the health fair project aims to teach graduate students to use practical skills, educate their peers and the community, and provide local residents with information about their health and its importance.
“I am proud that the UA School of Social Work is working together, in partnership with the Tuscaloosa City Police Department, on improving and extending quality of life among citizens of our community,” Terrell said.
