UA Student PR Organization Collects Coats for Hurricane Victims

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America is working closely with New York Cares to send assistance to those in New York City affected by Hurricane Sandy through the Tuscaloosa Gives Back campaign.

Right now, the demand is high for warm, gently used or new winter coats. Boxes are placed around campus for students and faculty to donate coats from now until Dec. 7.

Tuscaloosa Gives Back is also seeking monetary donations to send to relief efforts in New York City.

“We know the community in Tuscaloosa knows how to come together in tough times, and we are honored that you are channeling your generosity to New Yorkers in need,” said Wes Moe, director of volunteer relations for New York Cares.

Led by three executive board members, a group of UA PRSSA members set a goal to collect at least 200 warm, gently used or new coats. Drop-off boxes are located in buildings across campus, including the SGA Office in the Ferguson Center, Reese Phifer, Alston Hall and most dorms.

The Tuscaloosa Gives Back relief effort is also seeking at least $500 in monetary donations to send to New York Cares who will then distribute as needed. Any donations may be brought to Tracy Sims, instructor in advertising and public relations, in Reese Phifer, room 418-D.

Tuscaloosa Gives Back will host several fundraising events in the coming weeks, including bar nights, restaurant event nights and selling T-shirts. On Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. to midnight, Buffalo Wild Wings will host an event night on behalf of Tuscaloosa Gives Back. Part of the proceeds from each attendee will be donated to this relief effort.
