TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Applications for Ignite UA, a community-building program offered by First Year Experience at The University of Alabama are being accepted through Monday, Nov. 19.
Ignite UA is a program for freshman and transfer students as they transition to life during their first year at UA.
“Students who take advantage of involvement opportunities during their first year are often more successful and more satisfied with their college experience. Ignite UA is a great option for first-year students who want to take a first step to becoming engaged in the community,” Sara Hartley, executive director of First Year Experience and Parent Programs at UA, said.
Participants will be selected in late November and the program will officially begin in the spring semester. Throughout the six program phases, students will identify the knowledge and skills appropriate to lead others in achieving a common goal, recognize themselves as leaders, describe themselves as global citizens, and formulate a plan of action for their Capstone experience.
Students will also have the opportunity to connect with faculty, staff, and Ignite UA graduates throughout the phases, which is a new component of the program.
“Ignite UA is an excellent program to connect with other students, faculty, and staff while learning more about the resources available at UA. Many graduates of the 2012 Ignite UA program grew throughout the phases and now serve as leaders in various roles on campus. We are particularly excited to see the impact that our Ignite UA graduates will have as leaders of our group this year,” Mary Alice Porter, coordinator of First Year Experience and Parent Programs, said.
Applications are available at www.fye.ua.edu and are due (along with a resume) by Nov. 19 at 4:45 p.m. to 132 Mary Burke East. Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate first-year students by emailing the student’s name and contact information to maporter@sa.ua.edu.
The First Year Experience office provides new students with programs, resources and services that will ease their transition from high school, a community college or another college to academic and social life at UA.
