TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Rep. Mike Hubbard, speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, will discuss the state’s political history as part of the Anne Campbell Bloom Alabama Governmental Affairs Forum, sponsored by The University of Alabama Honors College on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in Russell Hall Auditorium.
Hubbard’s topic will be “The Political Landscape Change in Alabama; How and Why the Historic 2010 Election Happened.”
Hubbard was first elected to the Alabama Legislature in 1998 and was re-elected in 2002, 2006 and 2010. He represents District 79, which includes portions of Auburn and Opelika.
During the December 2010 special session, Hubbard was elected speaker of the house becoming the first Republican speaker since Reconstruction. He was re-elected to the position for a four-year term in January 2011.
In addition to his legislative service, Hubbard served two terms as chairman of the Alabama Republican Party. During his tenure as chairman, Republicans won all statewide offices and gained control of both houses of the legislature for the first time in 136 years. Hubbard has written a book, Storming the State House (New South Books, June 2012), described as providing an “inside story” about the campaign that ended Democrat control in state government.
A successful businessman as well, Hubbard is president of Auburn Network Inc., an Auburn-based media and marketing company that operates three commercial radio stations in the Auburn-Opelika market and is a partner in Craftmaster Printers Inc., a commercial printing company based in Auburn.
