TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Community Service Center will host its annual Sleep Out on the Quad Wednesday, March 28, to promote awareness of homelessness issues that exist in Alabama and across the nation.
The event will begin at 8 p.m. on the Quad in front of Lloyd Hall with a panel discussion featuring representatives from Habitat for Humanity, the VA Hospital, Jesus Way Shelter and the Tracy Dent Foundation.
Then, volunteers will be able to send emails for the Bama Blitz campaign and help make blankets for those in need. The night will end with a film about an Iraqi veteran’s struggle for survival, a documentary on TOMS Shoes and the Walk Without Shoes around the Quad.
After the walk, students will roll out their sleeping bags and spend the night on the Quad. Students must furnish their own sleeping bag and plan to leave around 6 a.m.
“The Sleep Out on the Quad will be an invaluable learning experience and a lifetime memory for students who participate. I challenge the UA community to give one night to show that we are concerned about the issues of homelessness in our community and throughout the nation.
“This event gives students the opportunity to provide meaningful service and raise awareness regarding an important cause,” said Charlotte Brown, director of hunger and homelessness with the Community Service Center and main organizer of the event.
There is no prior registration needed to participate, but students are encouraged to sign up on http://slpro.ua.edu to receive community service hours. All UA students are welcome.
