Community Service Center Kicks Off Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Drive at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Community Service Center is kicking off the 18th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive Monday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Ferguson Plaza.

The event will include music and free food as well as the opportunity to vote in a pie-throwing contest. Students, faculty and staff will be able to chose a contestant and make a donation in their honor.

The contestant with the most donations will return to the Ferguson Plaza Wednesday at noon to be the recipient of a gently tossed pie to the face. Contestants include several deans, student leaders and an athlete.

Also on Monday, a Stamp Out Hunger letter-writing campaign will take place from 6-10 p.m. in 205 Gorgas when students will contact family and friends and request donations for the BABH food drive in their honor. Prizes will be given to students who send out the most letters.

“The pie-throwing contest is an exciting way to begin the food drive competition. We want everyone in the UA and Tuscaloosa community to rally behind this cause and donate during the next six weeks in order to reach our goal of 250,000 pounds of food,” said Charlotte Brown, CSC director of hunger and homelessness.

Beat Auburn Beat Hunger is an annual food drive that began in 1994 and has since helped collect almost 3 million pounds of food. During the weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members “fight” hunger and poverty in West Alabama by challenging Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama to see who can collect more non-perishable food to help needy Alabama families have a happier and healthier holiday season.

The food bank is accepting all non-perishable food items, and collection barrels are placed at locations on campus and around Tuscaloosa. Monetary donations will be accepted at various Bama Dining locations, by texting BAMA to 27722, and online at beatauburnbeathunger.ua.edu.

The Beat Auburn Beat Hunger campaign will continue through Nov. 18.
