TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama will host a regional Science Olympiad competition for middle and high-school students Saturday, Feb. 12, at 9 a.m.
More than 500 students are expected to participate in events held on UA’s campus. Some of the events scheduled are science crime busters, disease detectives, awesome aquifers, microbe mission, mouse trap vehicle, battery buggy, and bottle rockets.
The events will conclude with two awards presentations at 3 p.m. in the Ferguson Theater and Ferguson Ballroom.
Area schools participating in this year’s event include Altamont School, Berry Middle School, Bragg Middle School, Brairwood Christian School, Clay-Chalkville High School, Demopolis High School, Hewitt-Trussville Middle School, Holy Spirit Catholic High School, Hueytown Middle School, Isabella High School, Jemison High School, Mortimer Jordan High School, Muscle Shoals High School, Oak Mountain High School, Our Lady of the Valley School, Pleasant Grove Middle School, Prattville Junior High School, Prattville High School, St. James School, The King’s Co-Op, Thompson High School, and Wetumpka High School.
UA’s College of Engineering is coordinating the competition with the College of Arts and Sciences.
In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 2,700 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last eight years, students in the College have been named USA TodayAll-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
