UA accounting students watch mock trial

…a simulated exercise to show accounting students what a career in criminal forensic accounting is like. Twenty agents from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division participated in the exercise, working alongside 26 junior and senior accountancy majors during the day. Ten faculty members and graduate students working toward Ph.D.’s in the accounting department and 10 members of Beta Alpha Psi, a professional accounting fraternity, also participated, taking on roles that ranged from snitches to criminals. “I even got to be a whistleblower,” said Mary Stone, director of UA’s Culverhouse School of Accountancy…After the students executed the warrant and searched the bar and apartment, they presented their findings to a mock grand jury set up in the moot courtroom of the UA School of Law. Veronica Hyman-Pillot, assistant special agent in charge of IRS Criminal Investigations at the agency’s Atlanta office, said the exercise “gives students an interactive experience in what IRS criminal investigation agents do day to day.” The exercise, known as the Adrian Project, named after Adrian College in Michigan where it was first tried — serves as a recruiting tool for the IRS, she said…

UA faculty and staff take part in Couch to 5K

University of Alabama faculty and staff, along with some of their families, put on their running shoes to take part in the first annual Crimson Couch to 5k this past weekend. The run/walk was sponsored by UA’s Health Promotion and Wellness department and was the culmination to a nine week training program that began back in September. More than 700 runners and walkers took off from the starting line at the recreation center before winding around the University in the 3.1 mile trek back to the finish line.
Steven MacCall: Winner of LJ’s 2010 Teaching Award

Steven L. MacCall…earned him the 2010 LJ Teaching Award, sponsored by ProQuest. An associate professor at the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, MacCall was nominated by Kathie Popadin, known as “Kpop” to the members of her cohort in the online MLIS program at SLIS. Sixteen of those students banded together to urge Kpop to write and submit the nomination…
Martin Scholarship will aid UA students

The Louise F. Martin Endowed Scholarship is now vested and will become active for the following academic school year at The University of Alabama for incoming freshmen from Barbour County. Lou Martin, who currently teaches at Little Scholars, has touched countless lives of people in Barbour County through her work as a teacher, administrator and mentor to children in both public and private institutions…The Louise F. Martin Endowed Scholarship was started by West Martin and funded primary through the gifts and charity of Lou’s family, the Barbour County Alumni Association and The National Alumni Association. An official endowment ceremony was held Saturday, Oct. 16, in Tuscaloosa. The award was presented by local businessman Charlie Schaeffer (who is chairman of the Scholarship Committee for the National Alumni Association at The University of Alabama) with the Martin family and local Barbour County Alumni president Craig Harris in attendance. The scholarship will initially award $500 per semester of the freshman year to the recipient, who will be chosen via a local committee…
