UA’s Play Golf America Tournament to be Held at Ol’ Colony

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama students and recreational golfers from the West Alabama area are invited to participate in UA’s Play Golf America Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 5.

The tournament will be held at Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa and is part of a grant that UA received through Play Golf America University. PGAU is the PGA of America’s program for college and university students who want to learn and become engaged in the game of golf.

A two-person scramble format will govern the tournament, and three different types of flights are available: UA students, faculty/staff and alumni/community. Prizes will be given for first, second and third place teams of each flight.

Tournament fees are $75 per player for student flights and $100 per player for flights made of faculty and staff or alumni and community residents.

The winning student team will represent UA at the National Collegiate Golf Championship to be held in Las Vegas Nov. 12-13. Flights to and from Las Vegas, as well as hotel and entry fees for the winning team will be paid by the PGAU grant allocated to UA by the PGA of America, the Ryder Cup Outreach Program and professional golfer Boo Weekley.

UA was designated as a recipient of the educational PGAU grant by Weekley, who has played on a Ryder Cup Team. As part of the PGAU grant this fall, UA students are enrolled in golf classes that are taught at Ol’ Colony Golf Course through UA College of Education’s department of kinesiology.

Dr. Matt Curtner-Smith, head of the kinesiology department at UA, is directing the grant. “Our main goal of the program is to motivate more college students to get involved in the game of golf. While we teach them how to play, we also like to help students on a personal and professional level,” he said.
