Collector donates $4.8 million in African-American art to UA

After more than two years of courtship, Paul R. Jones donated his vast collection of African-American art to the University of Alabama The new stewards of the $4.8 million collection plan to display pieces on campus and loan works to other universities and museums. “It’s significant beyond measure,” said Robert Olin, dean of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences at a news conference Tuesday. “We’ve only begun the possibilities this gift brings.” With more than 1,700 pieces, it is considered one of the largest collection of African-American art, and was coveted by more than Olin and UA. But Jones said he picked Tuscaloosa for several reasons, chief among them is Alabama. Though he lives in Atlanta, he was born in Bessemer. “This is my way of coming back home in wanting to give a gift to the state of my birth,” he said. “This is a gift to Alabama and Alabamians.”…Through October, 24 pieces will be in the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, and the bulk of the collection will be on display at the Bryant Conference Center in early March, Olin said…

Bama gets positive GSR report

Seven of the University of Alabama’s athletic teams produced 100 percent graduation rates for the latest reporting period, and two other teams graduated at least 90 percent of their student-athletes. Alabama produced a graduation success rate (GSR) score of 77 for the 1998-2001 reporting period, exceeding acceptable standards for completion of undergraduate studies, according to figures released by the NCAA on Tuesday…Alabama graduated 80 percent of its football players, beating out Vanderbilt (75 percent) for tops in the league, but UA’s actual graduation rate for that signing class is even higher…’There’s some really good numbers out there,’ said Jon Dever, UA assistant athletic director for student services. ‘They’re moving in a positive direction everywhere. ‘Overall, it’s a really positive report for Alabama.’…’The academic performance of our student-athletes continues to be solid, as exemplified by the graduation success rate,’ Alabama director of athletics Mal Moore said in a press release. ‘This is evidence of the work of our athletic academic support staff, combined with the leadership of our president and the work of our excellent faculty to emphasize academic success to our student-athletes. It also is a credit to the dedication of our student-athletes and the commitment of our coaches.’…
