TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama will welcome incoming freshmen and transfer students with a movie night, community service event, pool party and a shopping trip to Target as part of the Week of Welcome Friday, Aug. 13-Thursday, Aug. 19.
UA’s Week of Welcome is designed to help first year and transfer students in their transition to academic and student life at the Capstone.
A sampling of Week of Welcome events includes:
Friday, Aug. 13
Movie on the Quad: “The Blind Side,” 10 p.m.-midnight
What’s more fun than watching a movie outdoors on the Quad? The screening will feature free pizza and soft drinks. Students are encouraged to bring something comfortable to sit on. Take Crimson Ride Green 1 and 2, Gold 1 and 2, Blue Express, Coleman-Quad Express, Crimson. Rain location is Ferguson Theater.
Saturday, Aug. 14
Ripple Effect: Freshman Volunteer Day, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Registration at Ferguson Plaza
The UA Community Service Center kicks off the new school year with a service project aimed at engaging new students so they can get to know their community, their fellow classmates and the CSC through a day of service. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and service begins at 10 a.m. Students will volunteer until 1 p.m. and then return to the University Recreation Activities Room for lunch. Pool Party & Late Night @ the Rec, 8 p.m.-midnight, Outdoor Pool
Students will enjoy a pool party with a live DJ, food and games at the Student Recreation Center Outdoor Pool. ** UA Action Card ID required to enter the Outdoor Pool area. Take Crimson Ride Perimeter North and South.
Sunday, Aug. 15
Plaza Live, 7 p.m.-midnight, Ferguson Center and Crimson Promenade
The variety of services and activities that UA and the City of Tuscaloosa have to offer will be showcased. From 7 – 9 p.m., student organizations, campus departments and local businesses will interact with students. Entertainment will be provided by Hypsys, Vegabonds, Crosseyed Cats, Matt & Hope and American Moss. Take Crimson Ride Gold 2 (before 7 p.m.), Perimeter North and South (after 7 p.m.)
Monday, Aug. 16
Bama Blast, 5:30-6:15 p.m., The Quad
The Roll Tide Pep Rally will be held on the Quad near the steps of Gorgas Library with the Alabama Cheerleaders, Crimsonettes, Crimson Cabaret and the Million Dollar Band. Students learn the fight song and other chants and also get a chance to meet mascot Big Al. Take Crimson Ride Green 1 and 2, Gold 1 and 2, Blue Express, Coleman-Quad Express, Crimson.
Student Night at Target, 10 p.m. – 12:30 a.m., Target-Tuscaloosa store on Veterans Memorial Parkway
Target will re-open Monday night just for students. Transportation will be provided to and from the store where students will receive giveaway bags, special coupons and product samples. A DJ will provide entertainment. Shuttle buses will pick up from Riverside/Rose Towers, Ridgecrest and Tutwiler/Burke/Colonial.
