State prepared for seismic snapshot

A visual sweep of the nation’s underground is coming to Alabama, and two college students spent the summer prepping the state. “This is an unparalleled opportunity to get a really high-resolution image of exactly what’s going on beneath our feet,” said Andrew Goodliffe, a geology professor at the University of Alabama. “It’s going to be a massive leap forward in our knowledge of the geological history of Alabama.” Goodliffe is taking the lead on a joint project with Auburn University that sent a UA student and an Auburn student around the state this summer looking for ideal spots to place 23 seismographs…

…As new technologies are put to use in so many areas, the need for this type of journalism is especially important, according to Wilson Lowrey, a University of Alabama journalism professor. The lead author of a recent study of media communications during disasters, Lowrey stresses the importance of explaining the inherent complexities of today’s technologies to the general public, an especially relevant topic with the oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico. “For example, in the situation with the Gulf, well, BP did the wrong thing. That’s a bad company. They made bad decisions. If that’s the lesson learned – and maybe I’m opinionating here – but I think that’s the wrong direction to go. I think we also, at least, need to look at the question of well, what about our energy policy. Should we be drilling to the bottom of the ocean at all?”…
EDITORIAL: Renaming streets makes games better

On game day, few places in America can match the atmosphere around Bryant-Denny Stadium. Improvements to the stadium have done nothing but heighten the atmosphere,
Renaming 12th, 13th and 14th streets between Bryant Drive and University Boulevard for some of Alabama’s most successful football coaches is a welcome addition to those improvements. Fans who read the names of Frank Thomas, Harold “Red” Drew and Gene Stallings will recall some of their favorite football memories as they stroll through the festive crowds on the strip…Renaming the streets is a fitting honor for three men who contributed much to Saturdays in the stadium just a few blocks away. We hope fans remember them every time they pass the street signs.
Nick Saban’s name etched in stone
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – July 22
History was made today at the University of Alabama. Football coach Nick Saban’s name was etched into the stone in the spot where his statue will be installed on the walk of champions next month. Workers told us it took about an hour to etch his name into the stone, His statue will join likenesses of Gene Stallings, Paul “Bear” Bryant, Wallace Wade and Frank Thomas on the north side of Bryant-Denny stadium.
