House to debate historic tax legislation
Montgomery Advertiser – April 12

“The sales tax on groceries is a disgrace. It’s morally unacceptable,” said Susan Pace Hamill, a University of Alabama law professor who has been an outspoken advocate for changing Alabama’s tax system…Hamill said she expects if the proposed amendment is approved by legislators, opponents will launch a spirited battle to defeat it at the polls, much like the effort that led to the defeat of a tax hike proposed by Gov. Bob Riley in 2003. “I would expect the same cast of characters to come out again,” Hamill said…

Double-dipping bill may have wide reach
Tuscaloosa News – April 13

The fight against legislative double-dipping began with those legislators who also received paychecks from public schools and colleges, but it is expanding to others and has worried those who hold other public jobs…“It is aimed at the educational community in Alabama, and Democrats,” said David Lanoue, a political science professor at the University of Alabama…Lanoue said it could be argued that a retired public employee who serves in the Legislature doesn’t have the same conflict of interest as before but a different one. “They bring all the values and goals they had when they were employed with the two-year system or wherever when they’re retire,” Lanoue said. “Even if you say the direct conflict of interest is going away, that doesn’t mean you can expect them to vote differently or have the same types of issues.”…Lanoue said one way to get rid of potential conflicts of interest is to replace the current part-time Legislature with a full-time Legislature and either pay enough so none of them needs a second income, pay only one job at a time when the legislature is in session, or require them to take leave…

…destination shopping areas have to offer more than just shopping, said Kristy Reynolds, a University of Alabama marketing professor…Reynolds said central Alabama has two such areas — the Bass Pro Shops store in Prattville and The Shoppes at EastChase in Mont¬gomery. It is like an event to go there.”…

China put in political spotlight; local observers say the country is changing
Montgomery Advertiser – April 13

…A University of Alabama professor sees the protests as a test to the Chinese government, to see if it can lead through a crisis. “They can manage the human rights issues with more strategies … they have to soften their policies,” said Xiang Zhang, who teaches Chinese and who lived in Beijing for five years. “The Chinese government has already made progress. The Tibet problem is not formed overnight and cannot be stopped overnight.”…

Jones would be proud of Thompson’s actions
FoxSports.com – April 12

Thompson, a senior at the University of Alabama, stood facing a birdie putt that would take him to 3-over-par for the tournament, and safely into the weekend if he could maintain his position over the final three holes. Thompson’s ball moved a fraction of an inch closer to the hole. That’s when Jones, the creator of Augusta National, arrived from the heavens. Thompson called to a rules official and turned himself in as soon as the ball moved. Under the Rules of Golf, Rule 18-2, Thompson had no option but to replace the ball and add a one-stroke penalty to his card. He missed the subsequent putt. Instead of a birdie four he walked off with a bogey five, and with it his chances of becoming the low amateur in the Masters…There is every chance Thompson’s crime would have gone unnoticed had he kept quiet. However, that is not in his DNA…”That’s the person I am. I’m very honest and trustworthy. I don’t want to cheat.” …”That just shows the integrity of the man, and that’s why I’m proud to be his coach,” said Jay Seawell, University of Alabama head coach…
