A young Itzhak Perlman once stood in for his legendary mentor Isaac Stern at Carnegie Hall. That night helped seed Perlman’s own legend. Now, Russian violinist Vadim Repin will step in for an ailing Perlman at Moody Concert Hall on Saturday, and organizers hope audiences will remember that earlier tale….Perlman bowed out of the scheduled concert because of a shoulder injury; the same complaint forced him to cancel a March 9 concert….

Afro-Cuban rhythms, like the kind concertgoers will hear Wednesday when Pablo Menendez sits in with Tom Wolfe, Mark Lanter and Chris Kozak, have an instantly familiar feel. The son (pronounced sown) clave (pronounced CLAV-ay, meaning rhythmic pattern), blended from African and Spanish influences, forms the root of most Cuban music, according to Lanter, who will be behind the drums for the free performance at the University of Alabama’s Moody Concert Hall.

Film student wins scholarship; plans to call UA home
WZTV-FOX, Nashville, Tenn. — April 7

…Ravenwood High School senior Logan Satson. He won two regional Emmys from the National Academy Of Television Arts and Sciences for a music video he created and produced. Tonight, we can report that NATAS has also awarded him $40,000 John Cannon Memorial Scholarship named for the former president of the academy. Watson plans to attend the University of Alabama, where he already received a full scholarship. Congratulations to Logan Watson future news producer and filmmaker.

UA alumni prepping for banquet

Allen Lee Academic Banquet with guest speaker, Dr. Malcolm Portera, Chancellor of The University of Alabama System.
