Mercedes, UA offer new fellowship

It’s the latest addition to the University of Alabama’s co-op education program, which allows students to go to school one semester while earning money working in a chosen profession the next. UA and Mercedes-Benz, one of the county’s largest manufacturers, announced the new graduate fellowship program Wednesday. The program will be open to UA students working for master’s degrees in UA’s business and engineering schools. It’s being sponsored by Mercedes, which will offer the fellowships to two graduate students starting this fall… Barry Mason, dean of UA’s business school said he expects a lot of graduate students will apply for one of the two slots. He said about 25 students seeking master’s degrees in accounting indicated they would attend Wednesday’s announcement. And incoming graduate students who were not in town for the announcement already were being advised to contact UA’s Co-op Program Office. “The word is out,” Mason said. “It is truly going to be hyper competitive.” College co-operative programs have been around for more than 100 years, and UA started its program in the mid-1960s, said Roy Gregg, director of UA’s Cooperative Education Program Office…

UA student’s work results in record Haiti donation

The University of Alabama Community Service Center is presenting $10,000 to the West Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross, with the donation coming from the work of Tray Smith, a UA freshman from Atmore, as part of Haiti outreach efforts on campus. According to Neal Hardin, emergency services specialist with the American Red Cross, it is the largest donation ever obtained by a single student.

Transportation museum to emphasize river’s role

…The University of Alabama will eventually manage the museum, and the city is continuing to collect artifacts… The museum is starting out with an annual budget of $70,000, with 75 percent paid by the city and 25 percent by the University of Alabama. Lewis expects the museum to become self-sufficient through fundraising and programs within three years…
Heritage Association seeks unmarked grave

…Stephen Jones and Donald Brown are two such men. Jones works for the University of Alabama’s Office of Archaeological Research, and Brown is his assistant. They are looking for bodies. “Yeah, I can see what I would think to be unmarked graves,” Jones says as he surveys Auburn’s Pine Hill Cemetery. He and Brown are busy stretching out lengths of yellow measuring tape, then placing a pink flag at each meter mark…As Jones and Brown run their ground-penetrating radar over the uneven ground, they will place a flag every time they make a “hit.” As they cover the entire area, they hope a pattern will emerge indicating the head and foot of individual graves…

Small business owners: Optimism rising

…The Alabama Business Confidence Index, managed by the University of Alabama Center for Business and Economic Research, scored at 48.8, which is a modest rise of 1.5 points from the third quarter of last year. But a score below 50 still indicates tough times ahead, according to the survey. In the third quarter of last fall, the index jumped 14 points, marking a turnaround in confidence for state business leaders.
