TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Former University of Alabama All-American and Cleveland Brown NFL Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome will return to Tuscaloosa as the honorary chair of the first Bridge Builder Celebrity Golf Classic, sponsored by Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

Pre-tournament events are Friday, June 22, and the tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 23, at Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa. Tickets to the weekend of events are on sale and include a barbecue with Newsome and friends Friday, June 22, from 6-9 p.m. at the President’s Pavilion on the UA campus. Individual barbecue tickets are $15.

Registration packages for the golf tournament on Saturday range in price from $75 to $115. A semi-formal tournament victory dance at the Bryant Conference Center will include hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Individual victory dance tickets are $10.

Alpha Tau, the local alumni chapter of the fraternity, is the tournament sponsor. Proceeds will benefit The First Tee of Tuscaloosa, a program designed to introduce disadvantaged youth to golf, as well as other local charities and scholarship programs. “The tournament’s name reflects the hard work and lifelong commitment to building bridges of opportunity shared by Newsome and members of Omega Psi Phi fraternity,” said Samory Pruitt, chairman of the inaugural event. “Mr. Newsome’s civic activities are as impressive as his athletic career.”

UA President Andrew Sorensen will be participating in the tournament. “The University of Alabama is proud of the accomplishments of Ozzie Newsome and will always consider him a favorite son,” Sorensen said. Other participating celebrities include Tony Nathan, Johnny Davis, George Pugh, UA Athletics Director Mal Moore, Fox 6 Anchor Art Franklin, NBC-13 Anchor Mike Moore, Bob Baumhower, Hugh “Deacon” Jones, Harvey Glance, and Jerry Pate, among others.

Newsome, who received the Paul Bryant Award in 1996, is currently the vice president for player personnel with the Baltimore Ravens. He is credited with putting together the Baltimore Ravens team that dominated Super Bowl XXXV. “The University of Alabama, the Tuscaloosa community, and the fraternity have played a major role in my success,” Newsome said. “I am very fortunate that God keeps providing me with opportunities to help others.”
