Higher Education Day — Educators, students dread budget cuts

…“I think a lot of students will agree with the governor that our economic expansion is doing its part to help higher education,” said Cason Kirby of Gadsden, president-elect of the Student Government Association at the University of Alabama. “But I think we also understand that we can’t introduce $50 million in new programs (in K-12) while trying to cut higher education to such a degree.”

UA on service honor roll

The University’s emphasis on service learning has received national recognition with a spot on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for excellence in community service. “The President’s Honor Roll recognition calls attention to UA’s commitment to connecting the campus with communities across our state through diverse, morally responsible partnerships,” said Stephen Black, director of the UA Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility said in a statement. “It is my hope that here at UA we can continue to aspire to the highest levels of civic engagement through thoughtful, ethically driven academic pursuits and effective service to society at large.” The honor is one of the highest for schools that take part in service learning, or coursework that includes community service. It is awarded based on the innovation and range of service projects, student participation, incentives for work and how much service learning offered at a school…

UA, UAB among finalists competing for $100,000 Alabama Launchpad award

Eight teams from four Alabama universities will be competing in the finals to win up to $100,000 in seed money from Alabama Launchpad, an entrepreneur support and networking group that sponsors an annual business-plan contest…five teams from the University of Alabama, one from the University of Alabama at Huntsville and one from Alabama A&M University…The final phase includes teams submitting a revised plan for review by a panel of judges. Winners will be announced during the finale April 13-14 on the University of Alabama campus…

University of Alabama to host Gridiron Bash

The University of Alabama and New York City-based MSL Sports and Entertainment announced that the university will host ‘Gridiron Bash, The Ultimate Fan Competition’ the day before the annual A-Day football game. The event will take place April 11 and include a live performance by Grammy award-winning country singer-songwriter Alan Jackson, as well as a giant pep rally introducing the football team, appearances by coaches, video highlights, and other fan activities…

Crossing Points prepares students for jobs

…Crossing Points is program for special needs students collaborated by the Tuscaloosa County school district, the Tuscaloosa City school district and the University, said Donna Niblett…The goal of Crossing Points is to take special needs adults, 18 to 21 years old, and teach them the skills they will need for a job and how to live as independently as they possibly can…

Ala.’s biggest county in bond fiasco, seeks to avoid bankruptcy
