Birmingham Student Named UA 2001 Homecoming Queen

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Hill Ringland of Birmingham was named homecoming queen for 2001 at The University of Alabama’s traditional pep rally on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. on the steps of Gorgas Library.

Ringland, a senior majoring in finance with a 4.0 (straight A) grade point average, serves as president of her sorority, Kappa Delta. She is a member of XXXI, Mortar Board and the Anderson Society. Ringland also serves as treasurer of Blue Key.

UA President Andrew Sorensen is scheduled to crown the homecoming queen during halftime of the homecoming football game between Alabama and Louisiana State University at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. The court will also be presented along with the queen.

The other four members of the 2001 homecoming court are Bridgette Fisher of Nashville, Tenn., Charel Hebert of Hoover, Carrie E. Patterson of Lexington, Ky., and Andree Pickens of Houston.

UA students selected the queen and her court from 21 candidates in a general campus election Tuesday, Oct. 30.

The Homecoming Choreography Contest took place on Thursday. Winners included: First Place-Phi Mu, Second Place-Delta Zeta, Third Place-Kappa Kappa Gamma, Most Spirited-National Counsel of Negro Women and Best Costumes-Kappa Alpha Theta.

Winners in several of UA’s annual homecoming events will also be announced during the pep rally on Friday night.

Lawn Decoration contest winners for this year included: Sororities/First Place-Delta Zeta, Second Place-Phi Mu, Third Place-Zeta Tau Alpha, Best Use of Theme-tie, Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta; Student Organizations/First Place-Wesley Foundation, Second Place-Alabama Student Society for Communication Arts.

Quad Game winners included: First Place-Phi Mu, Second Place-Delta Zeta, Third Place and Spirit Award-Zeta Tau Alpha.

“Paint the Town Red” contest winners included: First Place-Circle K, Second Place-Zeta Tau Alpha, and Third Place-Gamma Phi Beta.

Judging for the contests was conducted by a panel of faculty, staff and alumni.
