TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Gwendolyn D. Hood has been named director and university compliance officer in The University of Alabama’s Office of Equal Opportunity Programs.
Dr. Nancy Barrett, UA provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced the appointment, effective April 1.
Hood has extensive experience in equal employment opportunity compliance issues, including 22 years of service with the U.S. Bureau of Mines where she served in various positions, including equal employment opportunity counselor, quality improvement coordinator, and equal employment opportunity officer. Since 1998, Hood has served as program manager of engineering/technical programs in UA’s College of Continuing Studies.
“Gwen’s proven record of excellence related to equal opportunity compliance issues is outstanding,” said Barrett. “I’m confident she will continue building upon the solid foundation The University of Alabama has in these areas.”
Under Hood’s leadership, the Tuscaloosa Research Center achieved — through affirmative recruitment and employment initiatives — the greatest degree of diversity among all nine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines’ research centers. In addition to administering the Center’s equal employment opportunity and diversity programs, Hood oversaw the Center’s special emphasis programs, including the Federal Women’s Program, and the Hispanic Employment Program.
In her new position, Hood will serve as the designated official for affirmative action, Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX and other civil rights compliance. The Office of Equal Opportunity Programs promotes a positive climate for diversity and ensures that UA’s employment and educational policies and practices are in compliance with federal, state and University requirements for equal opportunity.
Hood holds a bachelor of science degree from UA. She earned a graduate diploma in a management/leadership development program from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Human Resources Group in Washington, D.C. She will fill the position vacated by Dr. Kay Staub, who recently retired.
