Public Poetry Reading to Commemorate Publication of George Starbuck’s ‘Visible Ink’

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama English department faculty and friends from the Tuscaloosa community will read from “Visible Ink,” the first of two posthumous collections of George Starbuck’s poetry to be published by the UA Press, Thursday, April 4, at 5 p.m. at Hoole Special Collections on campus.

An exhibit featuring selected papers from the George Starbuck Collection will be on display at the time of the reading. A reception hosted by Hoole Special Collections will follow the event, which is free and open to the public.

George Starbuck was the Coal Royalty Chairholder in Poetry at the University in 1990. He then made Tuscaloosa his permanent residence until his death in 1996. He is the author of several books of poetry including “Bone Thoughts,” “White Paper,” “Elegy in a Country Churchyard,” and “The Argot Merchant Disaster.”

Next year, Kathryn Starbuck and Elizabeth Meese, the editors of “Visible Ink,” along with the UA Press, will present George Starbuck’s “The Works,” featuring poems from all of his books. His papers have been donated to W.S. Hoole Special Collections at the University.
