UA Women’s Resource Center to Present Feast and Focus Lecture Series

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center is sponsoring Feast and Focus, a brown bag lunch and lecture series on Tuesdays this fall from noon-1 p.m. in the Forum Room (360) of the Ferguson Center.

Feast and Focus allows women on the UA campus and in the Tuscaloosa community to discuss different health issues.

The 12 sessions for the fall semester have been divided into three mini-series of four sessions each.

The focus of the first mini-series is Healthy Bodies. Sessions include:

  • Sept. 10 — Helping Hot Flashes — This session will show alternative means of hormone balancing.
  • Sept. 17 — Mastering Menopause — Dr. Michael Thomas, UA Russell Student Health Center chief of medical services, will discuss the physical, mental and emotional issues women go through during menopause.
  • Sept. 24 — Get in Shape, Girl! — Kristen Davis from the UA Student Recreation Center will discuss current fitness trends such as yoga and pilates to help women discover what is best for them.
  • Oct. 1 — Necessary Nutrition — Dietitian Maggie Perry will help women develop healthy eating habits to fit in a hectic lifestyle.

The focus of the second mini-series is Healthy Minds. Sessions include:

  • Oct. 8 — Picture This! — Local photographer Skip Baumhower will give an insight into the world behind the camera.
  • Oct. 15 — Giving Something Back — Jeremy Henderson from the UA Office of Community Service and Volunteerism will discuss service opportunities in the Tuscaloosa area.
  • Oct. 22 — Finding Your Creative Self — During this session, women will learn how to find their inner creativity.
  • Oct. 29 — Brush up Your Resume! — Dr. Sue Cochran of the UA Career Center will help women update their resumes.

The focus of the third mini-series is Healthy Homes. Sessions include:

  • Nov. 5 — Creative Memories — Cecilia Hammond of the UA College of Communication and Information Sciences will show fun Creative Memories scrapbooking techniques.
  • Nov. 12 — Financing Your Future — This session women will focus on the economic downturn and methods to protect investments.
  • Nov. 19 — The ABCs of Child Care — During this session, women will discuss the latest trends of childcare and the options available in the Tuscaloosa area.
  • Nov. 26 — Martha Stewart Doesn’t Live Here! — Linda Caffee will give ideas on how to decorate for the holidays.
